Salivary Antioxidants
Antioxidants are a natural component of saliva. Research shows salivary antioxidants are extremely important in regulating oral chemistry and oral health.
PerioSciences has created a new category in personal care - Antioxidant based Oral Care. The importance? Oral health has now been linked to systemic health issues such as cardiovascular disease, alzheimer's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis and other serious diseases.
Did you know individuals with periodontitis in younger years have a four times greater chance of developing Alzheimer's disease?
Through dental procedures and the materials used in dentistry such as whitening, environmental elements and self-induced materials such as nicotine, tissues in the mouth are exposed to many types of free radicals or reactive oxygen species (ROS). An accumulation of free radicals, regardless of the source, can lead to a condition called oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is linked to series oral disease such as periodontal disease. Antioxidants fight oxidative stress. Antioxidants exist naturally in saliva and protect against oral disease including periodontitis and oral cancer.
"Although infection is a major trigger for inflammation and oxidative stress, there are numerous other causes, such as poor diet, alcohol consumption, nicotine use or chemical pollutants. Antibiotics control the micro-organisms that contribute to periodontitis and other infection, but they do not necessarily adress the free radicals and oxidative stress that accompany inflammation.
Saliva contains natural antibacterial compounds that defend against bacteria and other micro-organisms. Saliva also contains natural antioxidants that have been shown to neutralize free radicals contributing to oxidative stress and inflammation." -
