You may have heard about antioxidants when people about “superfoods” and wellness programs. But did you know that antioxidants are a natural component of your saliva, too?
Research has shown that salivary antioxidants are extremely important in regulating oral chemistry and oral health.
“Saliva contains natural antibacterial compounds that defend against bacteria and other micro-organisms. Saliva also contains natural antioxidants that have been shown to neutralize free radicals contributing to oxidative stress and inflammation.” –

How Do Antioxidants Improve Your Oral Health?
Free radicals can appear anywhere in the human body, but through various dental procedures and products that people take on their own (like nicotine), the tissues in the mouth are regularly exposed to many types of free radicals or reactive oxygen species (ROS).
As free radicals accumulate, they can lead to a condition that is called oxidative stress, which can be linked to oral diseases like periodontal disease. While infection is usually a major trigger for inflammation and oxidative stress, things like poor diets, alcohol consumption, and nicotine use and chemical pollutants can also lead to this kind of stress.
Antibiotics can be used to control the micro-organisms that lead to periodontitis and other infections, but that don’t necessarily help fight the free radicals or address the oxidative stress that may come with the inflammation.
If these issues are left untreated, it can cause even more problems because your oral health has also been linked to many systemic health issues, like cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and even Alzheimer’s disease. (In fact, people who experience periodontitis in their younger years have a 4x greater chance of developing Alzheimer’s disease.)
Antioxidants fight oxidative stress. They exist naturally in your saliva and can even help protect you from serious oral diseases.
